Describe the personalities of the couples you get along best with.
I get along best with people who feel awkward in front of the camera. I must - every one of my clients tells me "we're really awkward in photos". That's fine though - I'm right here with you, being super awkward behind the camera. But in all seriousness, I get along best with couples who are wildly in love, who want to have fun on their wedding day. I'm inspired by fashion and art, and my clients usually are too.
How did you get your start in the wedding industry?
It started in a dark room, when I was 4. My dad was a yearbook photographer in high school, and yeah, we had a darkroom in our basement. I probably didn't really learn the process before my parents disassembled it in favour of, sigh, storage space, but I do remember using the enlarger, making silhouettes of leaves and feathers.
Years later, when I went to college and took photography as an elective, my dad gave me his camera. I won't get into every step of the sequence that brought me to wedding and elopement photography on Vancouver Island, but let's just say it was a road full of twists and turns, and one I can't imagine not being a part of. Wedding season in these parts is long and intense - I found myself with back-to-back helicopter elopements recently that left me eating popcorn in my car in the airport parking lot between sessions. It's intense, and I spend my off-months (few of them that there are now) feeding my creative soul with mentorships and workshops, and also sleeping.
Is there a wedding destination or type that’s on your bucket list right now?
South of France. Spring/summer 2025. Let's do this.
What aspect of your job never ceases to give you butterflies or make you excited?
When I started shooting weddings, I used to cry when people said their vows. Everyone; didn't matter if I'd known the couple for years, or met them five minutes before - vows hit me right in the heart. I don't cry any more (it's too hard to shoot when crying, or to be taken seriously with mascara running down my face) but listening to the heartfelt words between a couple still makes me tingle.
